The Drumming Co.

Feel the Beat

Drums have been played in Africa for thousands of years. So what better way of exposing your clients to the rich enjoyment and fulfilling experience of African drumming, than by giving them each a hand crafted Djembe drum to play? Our various sessions are designed and led by a team of dynamic young facilitators who put emphasis on building spirit and team work in the group. The event is started with a cacophonous rumble to show the guests the chaotic possibilities of not working together. Only then do we build them level-by-level, until they are beating out thunderous African rhythms as a group.

Another aspect of our performance is African singing; there is a great unifying power in getting the group as a whole to sing, but with a twist: we teach them tonal melodies as well as traditional African songs. The interactive drum experience is the perfect way to add dimension to your conference opening, breakaway time or bush braai (barbecue).

Our session lasts for about an hour and depending on the group size, it will be facilitated by between two and five percussionists. We go into more detail about the history and cultural importance of drumming as well as all the fun of learning to play this wonderful instrument.

For thousands of years the power of the African drum has been felt, played and loved by her people. The drum has and always will be the heart beat and cultural foundation for every African nation.

Its immense importance as a communication medium and as an integral part of many traditional stories and dances ensures that the culture of African drumming will hopefully continue for a thousand more.

The drums that we play and love are called Djembe Drums. They were first documented over 800 years ago in the great empire of Mali and were very quickly adopted as a ceremonial instrument. They used for healing, ancestral worship, as well as for rights of passage.

The Djembe Drum has a very dynamic sound with a host of different tones. This has allowed the instrument to gain huge world popularity as a vibrant, exciting and most importantly, a fun way to take part in the rich heritage that is - African Drumming!
